How to Get a Zain eSIM (The Local Route)
Check your phone supports eSIM
Dial *#06# — if an EID number appears, the phone supports eSIM. The phone must also be unlocked. Most iPhones from XS/XR and Samsung flagships from S20 qualify.
Visit a Zain store with ID
Zain issues eSIMs for prepaid lines at its stores. Like every Iraqi line — SIM or eSIM — it requires identity registration in person, against a civil ID, national card, residence card or passport. If you are on a foreign passport, ask the branch about visitor requirements before you queue: what a store will accept varies.
Scan the QR and connect
The store issues a QR code — scan it under Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. Your Zain line, number and package work exactly as with a plastic SIM.
Who this route fits: residents, long-stay visitors, and anyone who needs an Iraqi phone number on Zain. If you're visiting for days or weeks and mainly need data, the registration-free route below is faster and works before you even land.

An honest note on networks
Buying an eSIMfly Iraq plan does not put you on Zain. We re-checked our own network database on 8 September 2026: all six Iraq country plans (1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB) are registered on Asia Cell 418-05 and Korek 418-40, both 4G. Zain Iraq's codes — 418-20 and 418-30 — appear on none of them.
That is not a downgrade. Asiacell measured faster than Zain nationally (38.0 vs 25.8 Mbps, Opensignal January 2026), covers the same Baghdad-to-Basra corridor Zain is known for, and is headquartered in Sulaymaniyah, so it also carries the Kurdistan Region.
If you specifically want Zain radio: the only routes are a Zain line bought in a Zain store in Iraq, or our Middle East & North Africa regional plans, which do list Iraq as Zain + Korek and start at $5.45 for 1 GB over 7 days. They cost more per gigabyte than the Iraq country plan — that is the trade-off. Both sit on the same Iraq eSIM page.
Korek status — checked 8 September 2026
Iraq's Communications and Media Commission cancelled its settlement agreement with Korek on 2 June 2026 and moved to shut the network down on 9 August 2026 and ordered the seizure of the company's movable and immovable assets, after scrapping a 2025 settlement over Korek's contractual and financial obligations. The regulator closed Korek's main Baghdad office and three sales centres on 20 August and told subscribers to stop recharging their Korek lines. A Baghdad court briefly suspended the measures on 23 August, then cancelled that injunction days later - sources date it to 24 or 26 August - leaving the regulator's action in force while Korek contests it. As of 7 September 2026 no shutdown of the network itself had been reported - only office closures, across eight governorates.
What it means for a traveller: very little. Asiacell is the primary network on every eSIMfly Iraq plan, is the fastest measured network in the country and covers the Kurdistan Region as well — Korek is the secondary. But if you were planning to buy a local Korek SIM or eSIM in Erbil, don't.

Yes — for prepaid lines, through Zain stores, with Iraqi identity registration. Zain doesn't sell eSIMs online to people outside Iraq.
Can I get a Zain eSIM before I arrive in Iraq?

Does the travel eSIM work in Najaf, Karbala and Basra?
Yes — southern and central Iraq is Asiacell's stronghold, and the same plan adds Korek as a secondary network. One eSIM covers the pilgrimage corridor and the whole country.
Does an eSIMfly Iraq eSIM connect to Zain?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. Re-verified in our own network database on 8 September 2026: all six eSIMfly Iraq country plans — 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB — are registered on Asia Cell 418-05 and Korek 418-40, both 4G. Is Korek being shut down, and does that affect my eSIM?

Offices closed across eight governorates between 20 August and 6 September. As of 7 September 2026 no shutdown of the network itself had been reported, only office closures. For a travel eSIM the practical effect is small — Asiacell is the primary network on every Iraq plan and covers the Kurdistan Region too. What it does change: buying a local Korek SIM or eSIM in Erbil is not a good bet right now.
Will WhatsApp keep my number?
Yes — the travel eSIM is data-only. Keep your home SIM installed with data roaming off; WhatsApp keeps your existing number and runs over the eSIM's data.
