Activation is more than scanning a QR code — the line has to be on, roaming enabled, and the eSIM chosen for data. Five steps, then the question everyone asks: when does the plan clock actually start?
Install at home
Scan the QR (or use the app) over Wi-Fi before you fly.
Roaming ON for the eSIM
Required for travel eSIMs — costs nothing extra on a prepaid plan.
Flip data line on landing
Select the eSIM under Cellular Data when you arrive — connected in minutes.
Works for all eSIM-capable iPhones (XR/XS and newer)
Install the eSIM profile
Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → "Use QR Code", then scan the QR from your purchase email (shown on another screen or printed). No second screen? Choose "Enter Details Manually" and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the same email. eSIMfly app users can install directly without any QR. Do this over Wi-Fi, ideally BEFORE you travel.
Turn the line on and label it
The new line appears in Settings → Cellular. Make sure "Turn On This Line" is ON, and give it a clear label like "Travel" so you never confuse it with your home line.
Enable Data Roaming for the eSIM (required)
Settings → Cellular → tap the travel eSIM → Data Roaming ON. Travel eSIMs connect through partner networks, which iOS treats as roaming - it costs nothing extra because the plan is prepaid. Keep Data Roaming OFF on your home line to avoid your home carrier's charges.
Select it as your Mobile Data line (at your destination)
Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → choose the travel eSIM. Keep your home line on for calls/SMS if you like - just not for data. Many people install early and flip this switch when the plane lands.
Connect and verify
At the destination the eSIM picks a partner network automatically within a minute or two. Toggle Airplane Mode once if it dawdles. Open a website to confirm data flows. If you see signal but no data, check Data Roaming again - then our troubleshooting guides cover the rest.
Install at home, activate on arrival — the timing that matters
For most travel eSIMs (including eSIMfly plans), the validity clock starts at first connection in a covered country, not at installation. Buy and install over home Wi-Fi days before the trip, verify the profile appears in Settings, then just flip the data line when you land. Zero airport stress, zero wasted plan days.
For most travel eSIMs (including eSIMfly), installing the profile does NOT start the clock - validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at your destination and data starts flowing. That is why installing at home before the trip is safe and recommended. Check your provider's specific policy if in doubt.
Install BEFORE you travel, over reliable Wi-Fi - installation needs an internet connection, and the airport arrivals hall is the worst place to discover a problem. Then simply enable it as the data line when you arrive; the plan starts when you first connect at the destination.
Run through: (1) "Turn On This Line" is ON for the eSIM, (2) Data Roaming is ON for the eSIM, (3) the eSIM is selected under Cellular Data, (4) you are physically in a country the plan covers, (5) toggle Airplane Mode once. If it still will not connect, manually select a supported network - our network troubleshooting guide has the exact steps.
Your choice. Keeping the home line active means you still receive calls and SMS (including bank codes) while the eSIM handles data - the usual setup. Just keep Data Roaming OFF on the home line so it cannot generate roaming charges. You can also disable the home line entirely for the trip.
No - a travel eSIM profile installs on one device, and most QR codes are single-use. Moving to a new phone usually requires the provider to re-provision or replace the profile, so contact support before wiping or switching devices mid-trip.
