The Kingdom of Eswatini was known as Swaziland until 19 April 2018, when King Mswati III announced the change of name. Older guidebooks, older airline systems and older SIM catalogues still say Swaziland; it is the same country. It is landlocked between South Africa and Mozambique, and for most visitors it is a two- or three-night leg inside a longer southern Africa itinerary rather than a standalone destination.

Mozambique is not in either Africa plan
Eswatini borders Mozambique, and the drive from the Lomahasha or Lavumisa side into Maputo is a common add-on. Neither Africa regional family includes Mozambique: the eSIMaccess pack lists 29 countries and the Airalo Hello Africa pack lists 36, and Mozambique is in neither. Your phone will offer you every network it can see, including South African ones near the border. It does not know which of them your plan is allowed to use. Choosing one that is not on your plan does not cost you money — a prepaid data eSIM cannot run up a roaming bill — it simply leaves you with no data and a signal bar that looks fine.

Eswatini is an absolute monarchy, described by Wikipedia as the last of its kind in Africa, and King Mswati III has reigned since 1986. That is a fact about the country rather than a verdict on it, and it is worth knowing because the monarchy is present in ordinary life in a way it is not in most places a visitor will have travelled: in the ceremonies, in the royal residences, and in what people will and will not discuss with a stranger.

Which network does an Eswatini eSIM actually connect to?
It depends on which plan you buy, and the difference is bigger than usual here. The Eswatini-only packs from Airalo (1 GB, 2 GB and 3 GB) declare a single network, MTN, and they declare it as 3G only. The 20 GB Eswatini pack declares Swazi MTN on 4G. The Africa regional packs declare Swazi MTN plus Swazi Mobile in Eswatini, on 4G. So if you want more than one network to fall back on, the regional pack is the one that gives it to you. Yes. The lilangeni is pegged one-to-one to the South African rand and the rand circulates as legal tender in Eswatini under the Common Monetary Area arrangement. Rand is accepted essentially everywhere; emalangeni are generally not accepted back across the border in South Africa, so spend them before you leave.
Should I buy a local SIM instead?
For a stay of several weeks it is reasonable, and it gets you an Eswatini number, which an eSIM does not. What it adds is a shop visit in business hours with your passport.
