Is Bitcoin still legal tender in El Salvador?
No, not in the way it was. Bitcoin became legal tender in 2021, but the law was substantially reformed on 29 January 2025 under El Salvador’s agreement with the IMF: accepting it is now voluntary for merchants, it is no longer accepted for taxes, and the state has been winding down its role in the Chivo wallet. In practice you pay in US dollars. A few businesses around El Zonte still take crypto because they choose to. Your eSIM gives you data for whatever wallet or banking app you use — we do not recommend one over another.
