Dubai eSIM: Data for a Holiday or a Stopover

Burj Khalifa, the Marina, a desert safari, or just eight hours between flights — a Dubai eSIM has you online from the moment you land. And we answer the question everyone actually asks: what happens to WhatsApp calls?

WhatsApp calls in Dubai: the honest answer

Yes — WhatsApp calls are blocked on local UAE networksBoth UAE operators, e& (Etisalat) and du, are legally required to block unlicensed internet calling. That covers WhatsApp, FaceTime and Telegram calls. It is regulation, not a fault, so there is nothing to troubleshoot.

What works and what does not:

✅ Always works

  • • WhatsApp messages, photos, videos
  • • Voice notes — the trick most people miss
  • • Email, Maps, Instagram, ordinary apps
  • • BOTIM and other UAE-licensed calling apps

❌ Blocked on local networks

  • • WhatsApp voice and video calls
  • • FaceTime calls
  • • Telegram and Signal calls

💡 Where a travel eSIM differs: when your data is carried over a foreign network rather than a local subscription, the local VoIP block frequently does not bite, and plenty of travellers make WhatsApp calls normally. Given the regulation, treat that as a likely bonus rather than a promise — voice notes and BOTIM always work.

Which network you actually get

Every UAE plan in our catalogue records du (MCC-MNC 424-03) as its network, listed as 5G. That is taken from our own per-package connection records, not from a brochure. The UAE's other operator is e& (Etisalat); both run dense, genuinely excellent networks across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Leave network selection on automatic. Manually locking your phone to a network it is not provisioned for is the single most common cause of "no service" on a travel eSIM.

Coverage: about as good as it gets

Dubai is one of the best-covered cities anywhere. 5G across the city, the Metro (tunnels included), the malls, DXB terminals and the Marina. Out on a desert safari you will hold a usable signal along the popular dune-bashing routes and lose it in patches further out — worth downloading an offline map if you are heading deep into the Al Marmoom or Liwa areas.

What data costs in Dubai

The UAE is not in anyone's inclusive-roaming zone. Our plans, checked against the live catalogue on 18 September 2026:

PlanPriceGood for
1 GB / 7 days$2.63A stopover — maps, Careem, boarding passes
5 GB / 30 days$10.19The usual week-long holiday
10 GB / 30 days$19.19Heavy maps, social posting, video calls home
Unlimited / 7 days$26.83Replacing hotel Wi-Fi — read the cap below

"Unlimited" has a fair-usage cap — ours included. You get full speed up to 3 GB per day, then roughly 1 Mbps until the next day. Fine for maps, chat and music; not for 4K streaming. Any provider not telling you their number has one anyway.

Prices move with the catalogue — the live figure on the plan page is the one that counts.

Installing it

  1. 1

    Buy before you fly

Pick your plan and pay — the QR code lands in your inbox within seconds.

  2. 2

Scan it at home on Wi-Fi

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. Android: Settings → Network → SIM manager. Install it before the airport; you do not want to be doing this on airport Wi-Fi after a night flight.

  3. 3

Turn it on when you land

Switch on data roaming for the eSIM line at DXB and you are connected. Turn mobile data OFF for your home SIM so it cannot bill you in the background.

Frequently asked questions

Do WhatsApp calls work in Dubai?
On the local UAE networks — e& (Etisalat) and du — WhatsApp voice and video calls are blocked. Both operators are legally required to block unlicensed internet calling, so this is regulation rather than a fault you can troubleshoot. WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes work normally. Travel eSIMs whose data is carried over foreign networks often do place WhatsApp calls fine, but nobody can guarantee it. The dependable fallbacks are voice notes and BOTIM, which is licensed in the UAE.
Which network does the eSIMfly UAE eSIM use?
Our UAE plans connect to du. Every UAE single-country package in our catalogue records du (MCC-MNC 424-03) as its network, listed as 5G. Leave network selection on automatic — picking a network by hand is the most common way to end up with no service.
Does my EU or US roaming plan cover Dubai?
No. The UAE is outside the EU roaming zone and sits in the most expensive country group for most European and American carriers, where day passes typically run into double digits per day of use. A prepaid eSIM is bought once and cannot surprise you on the next bill.
How much data do I need for Dubai?
A 1–2 day stopover: 1–3 GB. A week with maps, ride-hailing, social media and day trips: 5–10 GB. Replacing hotel Wi-Fi or streaming: 20 GB or unlimited.
Is unlimited really unlimited?
No, and anyone who says otherwise is not reading their own terms. Our unlimited UAE plans run at full speed up to 3 GB per day, then slow to about 1 Mbps for the rest of that day and reset the next. That is still fine for maps, messaging and music — not for 4K streaming.
Do I keep my own number?
Yes. Your home number stays active on your physical SIM and your usual chats keep working; the eSIM only carries data. Turn mobile data OFF for the home SIM so it cannot quietly bill you for roaming in the background.
Are VPNs legal in the UAE?
VPNs are not banned outright and are used by businesses every day, but using one to get around a block — VoIP included — sits in a legal grey area. We suggest staying on the right side of local rules and using voice notes or a licensed app such as BOTIM for calls home.
Is my phone eSIM-compatible?
Every iPhone from the XS onwards, Samsung Galaxy from the S20, Google Pixel from the 3, and most recent smartphones support eSIM. The handset must not be carrier-locked. Check your exact model on our compatibility page if you are unsure.
