The fact almost every guide misses: the British Virgin Islands is a British Overseas Territory and yet its official currency is the US dollar — it has been since 1959. Not sterling, not the Eastern Caribbean dollar. If you are arriving via San Juan or St. Thomas you do not need to change money at all. And you drive on the left, British style, in cars that are mostly left-hand drive American imports, which the UK Foreign Office notes explicitly.
⛵ Coverage on a Charter: Read This First
The BVI is the bareboat sailing capital of the world, and that changes the connectivity question completely. Most visitors are not staying in one place; they are on a charter yacht moving between Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada. So the honest question is not "does the BVI have 4G" — it is what happens on the water and at anchor. Three things are worth knowing before you buy anything.
1. We cannot promise blanket coverage at sea
BVI mobile networks are built for the land, and the islands are small and hilly. Signal comes from masts on the inhabited islands, so it reaches out over the water for as long as you are in sight of one and no ridge is in the way — and it stops when you are behind a headland, in a deep bay on the far side of an island, or well out past the reef. We do not publish a coverage percentage for the anchorages because we have no measured data for them and would only be guessing. Plan for gaps, download your charts offline, and treat mobile data as a convenience rather than as your safety system. On the water, VHF channel 16 — not a phone — remains the thing that reaches other boats and rescue services.
2. Your phone can latch onto a US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico network without telling you
We want to be precise about what is fact and what is a precaution here. The fact: St. Thomas and St. John sit a few miles west of Tortola and Jost Van Dyke, and the US Virgin Islandsis a separate country in every eSIM coverage list — a US territory, not part of the BVI — with Puerto Rico a third. A BVI-only plan covers none of them. The precaution, which follows from that geography rather than from any published measurement we could find: on the water, where the nearest BVI mast may be blocked and a USVI one is not, a phone left on automatic can register across the border. The symptom then is not a weak signal but full bars and no data. So before you decide the plan has failed, check the operator name at the top of the screen and, if it is not a BVI network, pick one by hand.
3. Our Caribbean regional plan does not include the BVI
This is the expensive mistake. We checked our own catalogue on 9 September 2026: the Caribbean Islands regional package covers 26 destinations — Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, the Caribbean Netherlands, the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Dominica, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Martin, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sint Maarten, Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks and Caicos — and the British Virgin Islands is not on that list. Neither is the US Virgin Islands. For data in the BVI you need either the BVI country plan or a Discover Global plan; an island-hopping Caribbean package will leave you offline the moment you arrive.

Network Coverage Across British Virgin Islands
We will describe how BVI coverage is shaped rather than hand out a grade for each beach. We have no measured signal data for individual anchorages, and a page that claims "good coverage at Devil's Bay" is inventing a number it cannot stand behind — which is exactly the sort of promise that ruins a charter. What follows is the geography, which does not change.
Where coverage is reliable
- • The settled parts of Tortola: Road Town, the airport at Beef Island, the main roads and the north-shore bays such as Cane Garden Bay
- • Spanish Town and The Valley on Virgin Gorda, plus the marinas and the North Sound resort area
- • The main settlements on Jost Van Dyke and Anegada, which are small but do have masts
- • Marinas and charter bases generally, which sit next to the settlements the network was built to serve
Where it thins out or disappears
- • Behind a ridge. These islands are steep. Tortola's spine and Virgin Gorda's hills block signal cleanly, so a bay on the lee side of an island can be dead while the bay on the other side is fine.
- • Uninhabited cays and the outer islands. No settlement means no mast. Expect nothing and be pleased if you get something.
- • Open water away from the islands, and the approaches to Anegada, which lies low and well north of the rest of the chain.
- • At anchor in a deep, enclosed bay, where the boat can lose the line of sight to the mast that was fine from the entrance.
Practical rule for a charter: assume you have data at the charter base, in the settlements and at most of the busy moorings, and assume you do not have it under way. Download charts, weather and anything you need to read before you slip the lines. Keep the VHF on 16.
Network Providers in British Virgin Islands
Which network you land on depends on which plan you bought, not on which one is "best". These are the networks our own plan data declares for the British Virgin Islands, checked on 9 September 2026. The BVI mobile country code is 348, so any BVI network will show that prefix if your phone displays raw operator codes.

There is a third licensed operator, and your eSIM will not use it. The BVI Telecommunications Regulatory Commission lists four current licensees; three of them run mobile networks: Flow, Digicel and CCT (Caribbean Cellular Telephone, network code 348-570). CCT switched on the territory's first 5G network on 2 October 2025. No plan we sell runs on CCT, so do not expect 5G from a BVI eSIM: Flow shut its 2G network down in April 2024 and runs LTE, and that is what a BVI country plan gets you.
If you ever pick a network by hand: choose Flow if you bought a British Virgin Islands country plan, and Digicel if you bought a Discover Global plan. Choosing the other one will leave you with a signal and no data. Otherwise leave network selection on Automatic and let the phone find the one your plan is entitled to.

Entry: the BVI runs its own immigration
The BVI sets and enforces its own entry rules, separately from the UK, so a UK visa waiver tells you nothing here. Since 1 January 2025 every traveller must complete an online embarkation card before arriving; it can be submitted up to 72 hours ahead. Expect a $10 environmental and tourism levy on arrival and a departure tax on the way out. Spanish and most EU passports, along with Mexican, Argentine, Brazilian and Chilean ones, do not need a visa; Colombian and Peruvian passports currently do, although holding a valid UK, US or Canadian visa with at least six months left exempts you. Entry is normally stamped for one month. The published visa lists are not always current, so confirm with the BVI Immigration Department before you book. Cultural note: the BVI mixes British administration with a Caribbean culture very much its own, and "island time" is real rather than rude. One thing worth saying plainly, because older guides get it wrong: the territory was hit hard by Hurricane Irma on 6 September 2017 and has since rebuilt. It is not a destination still picking itself up — the first 5G network here went live in October 2025, the regulator is auctioning more 5G spectrum, and arrivals in the first half of 2025 were up 3.6% on the year before, with cruise passengers up 25% in the second quarter.

Will my eSIM work while sailing between the islands?
Sometimes, and you should plan on the assumption that it will not. BVI mobile networks are built for the inhabited islands: coverage reaches out over the water while you are in sight of a mast, and it stops behind a ridge, in an enclosed bay on the far side of an island, and out past the reef. Download charts, weather and anything you need to read before you leave the dock, and keep VHF channel 16 as the thing you actually rely on afloat.
Can I use my British Virgin Islands eSIM in the US Virgin Islands?
No. The US Virgin Islands is a separate country in every eSIM coverage list, and a US territory rather than part of the BVI. No plan we sell bundles the two, and our Caribbean regional package covers neither. If you are sailing towards St. Thomas or St. John you need a plan that covers the USVI as well.
Does the Caribbean regional plan cover the British Virgin Islands?
No, and this is the mistake worth avoiding. I have full signal but no data. What is wrong?
Almost certainly your phone has registered on a network your plan is not entitled to. Out on the water, and especially in the Drake Channel or off the west end of Tortola, a phone can pick up a US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico network instead of a BVI one. Go to network selection, turn off Automatic, and choose a British Virgin Islands network: Flow if you bought a BVI country plan, Digicel if you bought a Discover Global plan.

Do the beach bars and marinas have WiFi?
Many do, usually for customers, and it is generally slow and shared. It is fine for messages and checking a forecast. Treat it as a bonus rather than as the plan, particularly if you need to do anything that matters.
What currency will I be paying in?
The US dollar. This surprises people, because the BVI is a British Overseas Territory, but it does not use sterling or an Eastern Caribbean dollar: the US dollar is the official currency, which makes budgeting straightforward if you are arriving via San Juan or St. Thomas.
