Which Network Your Plan Actually Uses
Read this before you pick a network by hand. Dominica has two mobile operators, Flow and Digicel, and our plans do not all use the same one. The Dominica country plan registers on Flow. The Caribbean Islands regional plan registers on Digicel. If you force your phone onto the other operator you will show bars and get no data, which looks exactly like a dead eSIM. Dominica is 750 square kilometres of steep volcanic ridge covered in rainforest, with the population strung along the coast. Mobile networks get built where people are, so the honest shape of coverage here is: usable in and around Roseau, Portsmouth and the settlements on the coast road, and thinning out quickly as you climb inland. That is a function of terrain, not of which eSIM you bought.
Hurricane Maria made a direct Category 5 landfall on 18 September 2017 and early estimates suggested 90 percent of buildings on the island were destroyed. The network you will use today is the rebuilt one. Both operators are trading normally and both appear in our current coverage data. Troubleshooting Guide
No service after landing
Almost always data roaming left off on the eSIM line. Turn it on for that line specifically, then toggle airplane mode for fifteen seconds. If it still will not attach, set network selection to manual and pick the operator your plan uses: Flow for a Dominica country plan, Digicel for the Caribbean Islands regional plan. Do not try both in turn - the wrong one is a network your plan cannot use.
Signal disappears inland
Expected, and not a fault. The interior is mountainous rainforest inside a national park. Signal usually returns at ridgelines, clearings and as you come back down toward the coast road. Carry offline maps and do not rely on the phone for your route.
Data disappearing faster than expected
Usually background activity: photo library sync, app updates and cloud backup. Turn off automatic uploads over mobile data before you travel. On a 1 GB or 3 GB plan a single overnight photo sync can eat the whole allowance, and a week of rainforest photography produces a lot of photos.
The profile will not install once you are there
Downloading the eSIM profile itself needs a connection you do not have yet. That is why the profile goes on the phone before you leave. If you are already in Dominica, use your accommodation WiFi to finish the install.

Is there 5G in Dominica?

How much data do I need for a week in Dominica?
Less than you would use in a city, because a lot of the island has no usable signal anyway and you will be outdoors. For a week of messaging, email, maps and a steady stream of photos, 3 to 5 GB is a comfortable amount. Go to 10 GB if you are uploading video, working remotely or making daily video calls. Mobile networks on a mountainous, heavily forested island are built where people live, which is the coastal strip. Download offline maps before you set out, tell someone your route and your expected return time, and do not treat a phone as your safety plan. This is a full-day hike in genuinely remote terrain and a guide is required for the Boiling Lake.

Should I just buy a local SIM instead?
For a long stay it is reasonable, and it gets you a local +1-767 number, which an eSIM does not. What it costs you is finding a Flow or Digicel shop during opening hours with your passport, on an island where most visitors have a short and tightly packed itinerary. For a week of hiking and diving, landing already connected is usually worth more than the local number.
How do I even get to Dominica?
Douglas-Charles Airport in the northeast is the main airport, with American Airlines from Miami and United from Newark, plus regional links to Antigua, Saint Lucia and Saint Kitts that are the busiest routes by frequency. From Spain or Latin America you will almost certainly connect, most often through Miami, San Juan, Antigua or Barbados. There is also the FRS Express des Iles ferry, which connects Dominica with Guadeloupe, Martinique and Saint Lucia. If your route goes through several islands, price the Caribbean regional plan against a Dominica country plan before you buy.
